The first thing you must do is secure your flights. Don’t book any accommodations until you have flights. This is very important. We originally planned to travel in November of 2012. I started our flight search in April 2012 and found out this was too late. We were unable to obtain Business Class seats on reasonable routes. Oh sure we could have flown Toronto – London – Cairo (1 day layover ) – Addis Ababa – Johannesburg! I kid you not! But I was adamant we were not going to go through Egypt, Ethiopia or Algeria, or on an airline I’d never heard of. As a result we changed the timing to March 2013. I also discovered that several of the high end safari camps and lodges on my shortlist were already booked when I initially started planning 7 months ahead. Pushing out to March of the following year gave us a much bigger choice of 5-star accommodations, many of which only have 6-8 rooms.
